66 Miles – Marathon Training

Another week done of (eventual) marathon training because I’ll run a marathon eventually, right?! Time will only tell which one, so I’ll keep training because I’m not quite in sub-3 shape yet.

Last week was an okay week of training for me–there were things that went well and other things that didn’t go so great. I was still happy to hit 66 miles for the week, complete two long runs, do two workouts, include two strength sessions, and run 33 miles on the treadmill. Can you tell I’m over winter?! Ha!

Monday

8 miles + striders and pre-run drills | 8:41 average pace

An easy run that didn’t really feel all that easy. My hamstrings have been notorious sore/tight this winter, and I am just over running in the snow and cold by this time of the year. (Okay, I actually never liked it from the beginning, but at least it is a little more tolerable in November/December.) This week was spring break for Cullen, and Craig took the week off, so at least I was able to sleep in a bit this week. (As long as Bjorn will let us.)

Tuesday

17 miles | 8 miles progressively faster

“I bombed this one,” I wrote to my coach after this workout. It wasn’t great from the get-go, and I thought about throwing in the towel early but finished the distance even though it was slower than I wanted. I started with 7 miles outside, and then ran 10 miles on the treadmill. I was supposed to start at 7:30 pace on the treadmill and then work down to about a 6:50 pace, which does not seem that hard, but this was tough from mile two. I had to get off the treadmill many times to catch my breath. I’m not sure what was going on, but I did stick it out until the end.

Wednesday

Off – I was very much glad to have this day off. I ran 10 days in a row, and I worked hard during those 10 days, so I always love my days off.

Thursday

AM – 7.5 miles | easy run | 8:34 average pace

I did this on the treadmill because there was new snow outside. It went okay. I got sucked into Fixer Upper, so that helped pass the time.

PM – 35 minutes of weight lifting

Friday

AM – 6 miles | easy run | 8:34 average pace

Another treadmill run because it sounded more appealing than running outdoors, which is pretty sad. I also know that it will take less time on the treadmill because I can often run faster on the treadmill than I can outside. Sigh. . . it will be over soon, right?!

PM – 5 miles | easy stroller run | 9:33

Uff! That was hard. I don’t know why I opted to push Bjorn in the stroller–okay, I know why, I wanted to get him outside and make it easier for Craig to make dinner. We made it and luckily I had a happy, content kid the whole time.

Saturday

10 miles | interval run: 2 x (1600, 1200, 800, 400 meters)
Paces – 6:59, 6:40, 6:19, 5:53

I was hopeful this would go well even though Tuesday’s workout was at least a partial fail, and I was happy when I hit all of the goal paces. The goal paces weren’t too aggressive, so that probably helped nailing this workout. I felt strong the whole time, which is always a confidence boost.

Sunday

13 miles | easy long run | 9:02 average pace

This was a tough run mentally. I started early in the morning before church, and the paths were all plowed, but this drug on and was slllooow going! It didn’t help that it was 4*F this morning, so I was cold! And then about half way through I had to use the bathroom badly, so that didn’t help. Luckily I made it to the grocery store before any crisis happened. Ha!

Well, that’s a wrap on my training from last week. I have a little less mileage and less intensity this week, which I’m hopeful with allow me to rest and recover a bit since I’ve been feeling a little sluggish lately. Now I just need the snow to go away, but who am I kidding, this is Alaska.

Hi, I'm Michelle

I love running around the lakes of Minnesota, running after my two boys, and racing anything from the 5K to the marathon. I have been blogging here since 2010 when I ran my first marathon. I finally secured my sub-3 hour marathon after trying for 8 years.
