Training Update – 77 Miles and Feeling Good

It has been a while since I’ve recapped my training, so here’s a look at last week’s 77 miles. It was a pretty big week of training, but thankfully things have been progressing quite nicely, and I am still feeling good.

I have two more weeks of training before I take a full week off, which will be much-deserved after 15 months of training with no break!

Workouts from January 11 – 17, 2021

Monday

AM – 10 miles | tempo run, treadmill
2 mile warm-up
15 minutes @ 6:40 pace (3 minutes recovery)
10 minutes @ 6:40 pace (2 minutes recovery)
5 minutes @ 6:30 pace
Cool-down to 10 miles
I was really happy with how this went. I felt good and strong throughout the entire workout. I can tell my body is adjusting to the treadmill now, but that definitely took a couple months of consistent training on it before it happened.

PM – 4 miles | easy run | 9:23 average pace
This was a stroller run with Bjorn. Luckily it seems he is now happy as a clam riding in the stroller. (We had a couple of bad runs this fall where he was trying to get out halfway into the run.) And this is your friendly reminder to keep those easy runs easy as my pace on this run was nearly 3 minutes/mile slower than my tempo pace this morning.

Tuesday

8 miles | middle up-tempo miles | 7:59 average pace
The middle 4 miles of this run I did at an up-tempo pace (7:35, 7:32, 7:37, 7:41). I felt good and those slightly-faster miles came easy! I am appreciating the temps being in the 20s, which doesn’t feel all that terrible.

Wednesday

AM – 7 miles | easy run | 8:34 average pace
Bjorn woke up at 3:45a.m., and Craig and I were up with him for an hour before we got him back down. After that Craig and I never fell back to sleep, so I was tired on this run. I had plans to meet up with a friend which was probably a good thing, so we chatted the miles away. I ended this run with 6 striders.

PM – 5 miles | middle 3 @ up-tempo (7:40-ish) | 7:54 average pace
I was surprised I felt pretty decent on this run after having a long day. I wanted to take a nap but there was too much else I needed to do.

Thursday

AM – 10 miles | tempo + 5K race pace
2 mile warm-up
4 x 6 minutes @ 6:40, 6:40, 6:35, 6:35 pace
4 x 3 minutes @ 6:11, 6:04, 5:56, 5:53 pace
Cool-down to 10 miles

This was another hard workout on the treadmill, and I’m so glad it went well! I felt good from the beginning and was able to crank out some decent splits at the end, but boy was that belt moving!

PM – 30 minutes of weights @ the gym

Friday

7 miles | easy run | 8:26 average pace
It was weird to only have one (relatively short) run and one workout for the day, but I was not complaining. I met a friend for this run, and as always, the miles flew by. I definitely felt the effects from the previous day’s workout and gym session on this run though.

Saturday

AM – 13 miles | long-ish run | 8:38 average pace
This was a so-so run–I didn’t feel terrible, but I didn’t feel great either. I did have a little something to eat before heading out for my run and an energy gel during the run, but I think I was just a bit lacking in some more calories on this run. Oh well, it is just one run, and I know not every run is going to go perfectly.

PM – 20 minutes of weights @ home

Sunday

AM – 8 miles | easy run | 8:35 average pace
I was able to meet up with a friend for these miles, which was nice to ‘force’ me out the door earlier than I would have gone out on my own. Surprisingly, it was around 30*F, so it didn’t feel that cold at all.

PM – 5 miles | easy run | 9:09 average pace
This was a very slow stroller run. Pushing the stroller is one handicap and pushing it on snow makes it even more difficult. But luckily Bjorn seems to enjoy it, and it gets him outside for fresh air.

Total for the week: 77 miles

Overall, it was a great week of training. I am so thankful Craig has recovered from his surgery and shingles because he can help out a lot more around the house, and I’m not trying to squeeze runs in while everyone is sleeping because I need my sleep too!

One other notable:
I was on my first podcast! I was interviewed by RonRunsNYC, and we chatted about my coaching business; how I ended up running only 25.2 miles at the RunFest Marathon, which I won at 9 months postpartum after having Cullen; and who/what motivates me to get out there every day to keep going after my sub-3 hour marathon goal. Listen to the interview HERE.

Hi, I'm Michelle

I love running around the lakes of Minnesota, running after my two boys, and racing anything from the 5K to the marathon. I have been blogging here since 2010 when I ran my first marathon. I finally secured my sub-3 hour marathon after trying for 8 years.
