How I Pack + Discount Code from Backcountry

This post is sponsored by Backcountry but is based on my personal opinion and all thoughts are my own.

It went from summer to fall in a matter of a few days here in Minnesota. While I will miss the warm weather, I’m glad I got at least got a couple months of summer after our move to Minnesota from Alaska in July. I have been pulling out all the cozy clothes in anticipation of the cooler weather which is kind of fun because in Alaska, I never put my winter clothes away, so now it feels like I have a whole new wardrobe again!

This weekend we are headed to Wisconsin for my cousin’s wedding, so I made sure to pack all my cozy clothes including these leggings and Patagonia pull-over from Backcountry. (Check the bottom of the post for a discount code on Backcountry items.)

While we are there, my sister and I are going to be doing a long run together, which I am so glad I am finally healthy and able to do one with her! We are also planning on an easy hike with the kids prior to the wedding, so I will need a wide variety of clothes for the trip.

Any time I travel, no matter how long or short the trip is, I like to lay out all the clothes I would possibly need according to the day. Here is a list of the outfits I am bringing on this trip:

Friday night:
1. Cozy sweatshirt + leggings + cute sneakers (traveling in the car)
2. Pajamas

Saturday:
1. Run: long sleeve shirt + shorts + sports bra + running shoes
2. Hike: fleece sweatshirt (like this Patagonia) + leggings + trail running shoes
3. Wedding: dress + heels

Sunday:
1. Comfy outfit for the car

I do my best to mix and match items in order to eliminate bringing excess items. (Ahem. . . but I always seem to pack a few ‘just in case’ items.) Once everything is laid out, and I know exactly what I want to bring, I use packing cubes to group my clothes together. For longer trips, I group them by the type of clothing: all my casual shirts in one cube, jeans/bottoms in another, running clothes in a separate one, etc. But then for shorter trips, I group them by the day. Using packing cubes is a game-changer for staying organized while traveling.

Finally, as I pack everything into my bag, I put the items I will use last on the trip at the bottom of my bag, and the items I will need first at the top. This way I can easily find my pajamas when we arrive at our destination, and I’m not digging to the bottom of my bag looking for my running clothes the next morning.

Since we have moved to Minnesota, our weekends have actually been filled with fun activities, which didn’t always feel like the case in Alaska. (I felt like we spent a lot of weekends at home.) So I have been having to pack a weekend bag quite a bit lately, and I’ve had to refine my method in order to streamline the process. I have another trip coming up the following weekend as I’m headed to Minneapolis to run the Twin Cities 10 Miler. Many of my followers on Instagram said they would also be there that weekend, so I hope to meet some of you in real life!

Hi, I'm Michelle

I love running around the lakes of Minnesota, running after my two boys, and racing anything from the 5K to the marathon. I have been blogging here since 2010 when I ran my first marathon. I finally secured my sub-3 hour marathon after trying for 8 years.
