Alaska Heart Run 5K – Racing While Pregnant

My first race while pregnant with baby #2!

I announced my pregnancy at this race to most of my friends and made it public on social media. It was a fun way to do it, but it was a hard secret to keep for 10 weeks! Thanks to Sarah Marie Design Studio for the fun shirt!

I had very little expectations going into this race. My purpose for this race was to announce the pregnancy and push the pace a little and see what my 14 week pregnant body could do. My easy runs at a 9:00+ pace left me breathless, so I just wanted to get out there, enjoy the race atmosphere and maybe run below a 7 minute/mile pace, which I did!

My splits were actually pretty consistent, and I surprisingly had negative splits–too bad I can’t do that when I’m not pregnant.

Mile 1 – 6:45
Mile 2 – 6:42
Mile 3 – 6:37

My Garmin watch had me at 21:03 (which was the same as my chip time), but I guess I didn’t run the tangents well enough, so ended up running 3.16 miles, which gave me an average pace of 6:39 for that distance.

I felt decent during the race–still very out of breath, but I knew it was only a 5K, so I figured I could hang on for 3 miles. I passed a few women towards the end of the race, which is always a bit of a confidence boost.

Craig signed me up for the race and added a nice nickname of “the Snail” to my registration page. Ha! I was happy to place 14th for the women and 3rd in my age group in what is always quite a competitive field.

I’m hoping to be able to do a handful more races this summer, but I also know that there’s a lot that’s out of my control during this time of my life, so I just have to take it week by week and day by day.

Hi, I'm Michelle

I love running around the lakes of Minnesota, running after my two boys, and racing anything from the 5K to the marathon. I have been blogging here since 2010 when I ran my first marathon. I finally secured my sub-3 hour marathon after trying for 8 years.
