Weekend Highlights + A Question on Postpartum Running

Here are some pictures from the weekend. Enjoy!

I finally captured Cullen’s smile on camera!

Saturday morning we walked to the coffee shop to meet a friend and her baby daughter.

Then we went shopping to try and find a suit for Craig. We didn’t find anything we liked, so we went to eat at a new restaurant in town: BurgerFi.

Sunday morning was filled with a poop explosion, church, and a (very) light dusting of snow. We haven’t seen snow in a while. I’m okay with that, but most people couldn’t believe their eyes.

My afternoon snack: a Banana Berry Smoothie.

Cullen spent a lot of time playing on his playmat this weekend, which he absolutely loves.

I need some advice from other moms who have had a C-section and then returned to running shortly afterwards.

As I mentioned in a previous post, sometimes when running, I can feel my incision area. It doesn’t necessarily hurt, but I can feel it and it doesn’t feel quite right. I don’t know if the muscles are still weak or the inner incision on the uterus isn’t fully healed or what is going on. I, of course, don’t want to delay the healing process, so I’m curious to know how soon after you had a C-section were you able to run?

I did some “research” online, and it seemed like those who had the same feeling as I do worked their core muscles and the feeling went away. Please comment below if you can provide any insight to me!

Hi, I'm Michelle

I love running around the lakes of Minnesota, running after my two boys, and racing anything from the 5K to the marathon. I have been blogging here since 2010 when I ran my first marathon. I finally secured my sub-3 hour marathon after trying for 8 years.

I Started walking at 6 weeks pp because I had that feeling just moving around the house. I did couch to 5k starting at 8 weeks. Yeah, I’d hoped to come back faster but I really really didn’t want to do anything that would put me back on the couch. So when I got those feelings while running, I pulled back for a few days. Do you wear a belt? That definitely helped. And running every other day. It gets better. But it may take months. Occasional twinges, no big deal but regular would make me pull back.

I have not tried a belt, but I will now that you mentioned it! I might have to do every other day for the time being.

I haven’t had a c-section, but I have had a deep incision into my pelvis, down to the bone. I think it’s the same thing you’re describing. To me, it felt like a pulling sensation and sometimes could be a little painful depending on how far I stretched. Does that sound like what might be happening? I was told that it is really common for scar tissue, which is really thick and inflexible itself, to adhere to all of the nearby layers of tissue. If you think it might be the same thing, massaging the scar and pulling it in a few different directions will eventually help soften the scar tissue.

Yes, I would agree there is a pulling sensation sometimes. I did ask one of my friends who is a physician, and he said that it is probably just scar tissue built up.

I had the original burger because Craig always gives me ‘the look’ when I order something “flavorless,” but I am going to try that next time!

I returned to running 6 weeks after my c section and have had no pain and haven’t felt my incision while running or other activities since maybe 8 weeks? But that was after 2 weeks of doing literally nothing other than baby care. I tried going for some walks at 2 weeks pp and had some pain and just stopped any unnecessary movement whatsoever. Around 4 weeks I felt better and returned to slow, easy walking (talking like 10 minutes at a time at first). Even now I still am running less and slower than my old “usual”. My belief was that delaying running couldn’t hurt, but rushing it could. I’m no doctor but I’m a firm believer that a little rest can save a lot of trouble down the line. Have you called your doctor? I hope you are enjoying pain free running soon, good luck!

Hi! Last May I had a big surgery in my lower abdomen, I thought that having the tissue healed meant that everything was ok and back to normal but in reality, it takes for a a few months to stop “feeling” the scar. My scar felt itchy and had a pulling sensation for about 4 months (mostly with tight clothes), I massaged it and I think that it really helped me. I checked with my Ob/Gyn and he said that those sensations don’t mean your uterus isn’t healing, but like all things heath related, take your time and check with your doctor if you have any concerns. It does get better! 😀
