Sisters Trip to Denver, CO

Now that I live in Minnesota, my sister, Kristy, and I can take trips with each other! (It was too hard when I lived in Alaska.) We hope this becomes a yearly tradition because it was fun to get away for a few days.

Kristy and I decided to fly to Denver for a few days. I have a good friend, Lacey, who I met when teaching my first year in Mitchell, South Dakota (home of the Corn Palace if you’re familiar with that). We were both first year teachers and hit it off from the start. We formed a great friendship those 10 months I was there before I moved to Alaska in 2007. Lacey was then in my wedding the next year in 2008. Even though we’ve lived far away all these years, it’s one of those friendships you pick up right where you left off.

So this trip was a little bit of a sisters trip but also a chance to see my friend Lacey. We were there from Wednesday afternoon until early Sunday morning. It was the perfect amount of time, and we had the chance to do some running, do some content creating, see a few sights, and meet up with other friends we’ve met through Instagram.

Kristy and I did run a 5K for fun while we were there. We knew running at altitude would be tough, so we opted to do the race for fun. We got matching outfits, sparkles for our faces, and had fun with it!

We ran the Cookie Chase 5K in Denver around Sloan’s Lake. It was a great little race! You can watch a video recap of our race HERE in a reel we made for Instagram. As well as this fun sister/”twin” reel we made that took entirely way too long to film and edit.

One day we went to Boulder where we walked Pearl Street, had sushi at Japango, and met Sara from Elevate Your Running Podcast as we have both been on her podcast.

We also did a few runs on the High Line Canal Trail, which was so nice for running! I definitely noticed the altitude when running in Denver. It wasn’t too bad running flat, but I definitely noticed it going uphill–even a slight incline.

Kristy and I love trying new restaurants when we travel. I was on the search for good coffee, good matcha, and any other fun cuisine we could find. The sushi pictured above was definitely a hit. We also tried a couple rooftop bars in Denver, one one-in-the-wall Thai place, and a fun coffee shop after one morning run.

We also went to the history museum downtown Denver for a 90s exhibit–I think that officially makes us old, as well as the botanical gardens. We also had a fair amount of downtime where we hung out, reminisced about the days of living in Mitchell, and took sunset walks.

Kristy and I hope to make a sister’s trip an annual occurrence: Tahoe and Banff were thrown out as possible suggestions for next year!

Hi, I'm Michelle

I love running around the lakes of Minnesota, running after my two boys, and racing anything from the mile to the marathon. I have been blogging here since 2010 when I ran my first marathon. I finally secured my sub-3 hour marathon after trying for 8 years.

I live near Tahoe and it’s a great place for next year if you like the outdoors, lots of trails for running (high altitude).
