A Day in the Life – 10 Months Old (+ a 5 Year Old)

Well, this is going up a week late but such is life these days. My aunt was in town and then my parents were in town for a week, so life has been even more hectic lately. Also, it is summer in Alaska where the sun barely sets and you’re in constant must-do-all-the-things mode.

Last Monday (July 27th), Bjorn officially turned 10 months old. He is a pretty happy-go-lucky kid as long as he is at home surrounded by his immediate family or outside. If he sees a stranger though, he will often break into tears immediately. Ha!

He currently has 10 teeth, weighs 23 pounds, loves standing, finding any sort of water (the dog bowl and toilet included), sleeps from 6:30 p.m. – 6:00 a.m., takes two naps (60-90 minutes), is growing like a weed, and still loves all foods (except hard boiled eggs).

Our schedule is very similar to the 9 month update. Bjorn still takes two naps a day around 9:00 a.m. and 1:30/2:00 p.m. The only slight change in his schedule is that we have been putting him to bed a little earlier at 6:30 p.m. (rather than 7:00 p.m.) because he has been waking up at 6:00 a.m. Other than that, our days typically follow this schedule:

6:00 a.m. Bjorn wakes up. (Sometimes he wakes up before 6:00 a.m., but I always wait to get him until a little after 6:00 a.m.)

  • nurse, change diaper and clothes, eat breakfast
  • Depending upon how long my run is, I will sometimes sneak out of the house before Bjorn is up, so then Craig will get him and take care of him while I’m running.

7:45/8:00 a.m. I return from running and Craig starts work.

  • During this time I will nurse Bjorn (if I didn’t do it earlier), eat breakfast myself, clean up the kitchen.

9:00 a.m. Bjorn’s first nap. Bjorn’s naps can vary anywhere from 45 – 120 minutes, but least we are done with his 30 minute naps–hallelujah! Usually his naps are between 60-90 minutes.

  • During this time I will often stretch, do an Instagram post, take a shower, and get ready for the day. Cullen will often play on his own, read books, or do school work if I’m really on top of it.

10:00/10:30 a.m. Bjorn wakes up, and I will nurse him again. Sometimes I will give him another snack, other times I will wait until lunch time to feed him more.

  • Bjorn and Cullen will often play together while I pick up around the house or finish getting ready.
  • If we have plans for getting out of the house (errands or hike) this is when we’ll do it.

Noon Sometimes lunch happens at home, othertimes lunch is had while we’re out-and-about.

1:30/2:00p.m. Depending upon what time Bjorn wakes up from his morning nap determines his afternoon nap. Three hours in between the two is the magical number right now, and it is like clock-work as to when he needs to go down again.

  • During his second nap of the day is when I try to pound out as much work as possible.

2:30/3:00 p.m. I try to get the boys outside during this time if we haven’t already.

5:30 p.m. Dinner

6:00 p.m. Start bedtime routine for Bjorn.

6:30 p.m. Bjorn goes to bed, and I try to get as much work done as possible.

On the particular Monday I documented, my parents were in town, so I had extra help, which I will never complain about. They were able to help out with the boys a lot while they were in town, plus we got out for a lot more day trips than we normally would. Here’s how our day went down.

5:45 a.m.
My alarm goes off for my run, and I start getting ready: go to the bathroom, brush my teeth, change my clothes, put my hair up, etc.

6:00 a.m.
I hear Bjorn on the monitor. I finish getting ready before getting him.

6:20 a.m.
I go into Bjorn’s room and nurse him, change his diaper, and dress him for the day.

6:40 a.m.
Today I hand him off to my parents, so I can do my run. I run 7 miles with a friend.

7:45 a.m.
I return home to breakfast made by Craig. (He’s so good.) I try to grab a few bites in between tending to Bjorn, picking up around the house, and figuring out our plans for the day.

8:50 a.m.
Before I know it, it is time to put Bjorn down for his nap, so I go upstairs, change his diaper, put his sleep sack on, read a book, and then lay him in his crib awake. He falls asleep by 9:00 a.m.

I use this time to foam roll, shower, do an Instagram post, and get ready for the day. My mom plays school with Cullen, and they also put a puzzle together.

10:20 a.m.
Bjorn wakes up for the day. I nurse him and read a couple books to him.

10:35 a.m.
We gather our things and then head outside with my parents for an adventure around town. We end up going to the Campbell Creek Estuary, which our friends recently introduced us to. We walk around, look at the birds, and sadly Cullen gets stung by a bee.

12:00 p.m.
We decide to get subs for lunch at Firehouse Subs and then eat them at a nearby park.

1:00 p.m.
It is time to head back home for Bjorn’s afternoon nap.

1:15 p.m.
We arrive home, and I put Bjorn down for his afternoon nap. I use his nap time to catch up on my email inbox and do some other computer work. My parents play a card game with Cullen.

2:45 p.m.
Bjorn wakes up from his afternoon nap. I nurse him, change his diaper, and then take some 10 month old photos.

3:10 p..m.
I feed Bjorn a snack, and I pick up around the house again.

3:30 p.m.
My parents take the boys for a walk while I try to knock out some more work. (It is never-ending!)

4:00 p.m.
I start working on dinner. Luckily my mom and Craig pitch in because I have a Zoom call with my virtual training group athletes.

4:30 p.m.
I do a Zoom call with my sister (who is a registered dietitian) and the women we are coaching through a virtual training group. We chat all things nutrition, and I even learn a few things.

5:30 p.m.
We eat dinner.

6:00 p.m.
Time to get Bjorn ready for bed. Craig gives him a bath, and I nurse him one last time, read books, and put him down for the night.

6:30 p.m.
Bjorn is asleep for the night.

7:00 p.m.
My mom graciously cleans up the kitchen, and then we hang out and play Phase 10 together. (One of Cullen’s current favorite card games.)

9:00 p.m.
We all get ready for bed after a busy day.

9:30 p.m.
I tuck Cullen into bed.

10:00 p.m.
Lights out for everyone else.

The end!

Hi, I'm Michelle

I love running around the lakes of Minnesota, running after my two boys, and racing anything from the 5K to the marathon. I have been blogging here since 2010 when I ran my first marathon. I finally secured my sub-3 hour marathon after trying for 8 years.
