Weekend Highlights

We had a little extended weekend as Craig was off for Veteran’s Day on Friday.

I got up early that morning at 6:00 a.m. and cleaned the house because I hadn’t done it the night before (which is usually not the case). Craig and Cullen woke up around 8:30 a.m., and then I went for a run in the daylight! I just did an easy 5 miles around my neighborhood. (Side note: I’ve been running in this same neighborhood for 10 years, but I’m not sick of my routes. I actually prefer to know a route because it goes by a lot faster than a new route.)

I’ve had problems with my watching dying on cold runs. The battery was 40% charged, and it still died. Has anyone else had this problem?

 

When I got back, Craig went to the gym while I got ready for the day. We went to the coffee shop and hung out while Cullen played with the toys. (It is one of his favorite places to go and thing to do.)

Afterwards we went to Cabela’s because Craig had a gift card to use from his birthday. (It is impressive he waited an entire week to use it.) Cullen insisted on bringing in Mr. Moose with him, which is actually a stuffed decor item with a metal rod through it, so not snuggly like a regular stuffed animal would be.

We also made a stop at Skinny Raven because on your days off from work, don’t you want to spend them at your place of employment? Ha! I guess that goes to show you how much I love my job–and the people I work with!

When we got back home, we hung out, I made the Recovery Quinoa Salad from Run Fast Eat Slow cookbook, and had dinner. I also cleaned up the house (again), did some laundry, and was in bed by 9:45 p.m.

Saturday morning I did a long-ish run of 11 miles. I ran from my house, to my friend Kelly’s house, ran 5 miles with her, and then ran back home. It is a great way to break up a run! I wasn’t sure if I would be able to run 11 miles, or if I would have to cut it short since last week’s 9 miler went okay but not great.

With the snow we got last weekend, I am being reminded how much more fatigued my legs get running on snow and ice. Every day leaves my legs–especially hamstrings and glutes–feeling sore like I just lifted weights. Of course at the beginning of every winter I forget this.

The rest of Saturday was spent working. Sunday morning I did some blog and Beautycounter work before Craig and Cullen woke up. Then we got ready, went to church, and then I worked all afternoon, came home, cleaned the house (Do you see a pattern?), and the day flew by without a picture!

    Hi, I have been following you for years for inspiration and motivation. I’m looking for some advance. I am moving from Florida to northeastern Oregon. They already had their first snow. What type of running clothes am I going to need to run in winter? How many layers do you wear?

      You will want good sweat-wicking pieces that can layer easily. A good option for your top half is a long sleeve base layer + a thin fleece layer + a windbreaker/windproof jacket. A vest + long sleeve is also a good option if it isn’t super cold and you just want to insulate your core. For your legs, an thicker pair of tights with some fleece lining on the inside and windproofing material on the outside (especially on your quads) is really nice for those cold days.
