Dreaming BIG

There’s been one BIG running goal I’ve had for myself since November 2013.

It is a time goal. A time goal for the marathon that still seems pretty far-fetched, but I’m willing to take the risk, work my butt off, and see if it is possible to achieve this dream.

I haven’t told too many people because I’m scared I might not be able to achieve it. I’m one that if I say I’m going to do something, you’d better believe it will happen–or at least I will do everything in my power to try and make it happen.

I wasn’t even the one to put the crazy idea in my head. It was my coach, Nichole, before she was my coach. She was the first one to believe in me. Believe that this very average college runner could achieve times that I never would have dreamed of.

That goal. . . . a sub-3 hour marathon!

Right now my PR is 3:17. That’s 18 minutes I have to shave off, which means running each mile 40 seconds faster. That’s a lot!

I have come a long ways already running my first marathon I ran in 3:44. But still! This is crazy-talk!

But like I said, Nichole believe is me, and I know she isn’t pulling my leg. So I’m dreaming BIG and going for it. Every morning I run I think about this goal. It is what motivates me when I’ve been up with Cullen 4 times that night yet I still drag myself out of bed at 5:00 a.m. to go for a run. It is what drives me to push just a little bit more during the last track interval. It gives me motivation to be the fastest I can be and prove that I can be faster after having a baby!

Hi, I'm Michelle

I love running around the lakes of Minnesota, running after my two boys, and racing anything from the 5K to the marathon. I have been blogging here since 2010 when I ran my first marathon. I finally secured my sub-3 hour marathon after trying for 8 years.

Big running goals are scary, especially when you put them out there for the world to see. I have a few that swirl around in my head, but mostly I’ve kept them to myself.

That’s an awesome dream and one I definitely think you are capable of achieving! I’ve always been impressed with your paces and dedication to training, I have no doubt with the help of your coach this is something that is totally doable!

I am so excited! It’s funny we are so alike – when I first started dreaming, I was so scared to tell ANYONE! I didn’t want to tell them about this ridiculous goal that I was fairly certain I wouldn’t meet (just very, very hopeful!). I thought they’d judge me for not being rational and then judge me when I failed to reach it. But, once I told Jerry and we set to work, I confided in a couple more people (the start of “Team Nichole”!), and it actually made me feel better! I now had to hold myself accountable to my goal! It made it real and I pushed harder knowing others knew about it. And the best thing? No one judged! They just said, let’s get after it! They supported me even more! So… I’m glad you “went public” with OUR goal (note not just yours now!), and I can not wait for the days and races ahead. All in.
