Heart Run 5K 2015 – Race Recap

Well, I don’t know where that came from. I even surprised myself with my performance at the Heart Run on Saturday.

Somehow I managed to run within 11 seconds of my 5K PR yesterday. I ran 19:31 at the Heart Run on Saturday, and my PR is 19:20, which I set at the Bear Paw 5K during the summer of 2013. I am ecstatic that I am in this great of shape at the beginning of the racing season and to be performing this well 6 months postpartum–I definitely can’t complain about that!

I felt really good throughout the entire race. There was one sizable hill, but I didn’t think it was that bad. (I think it helped that I ran it a couple of times on Thursday before the race.) The course did have 3 sharper turns (a couple of them were hairpin turns), along with some 90 degree turns, so I didn’t think it was a super fast course.

As usual I went out a little on the fast side, as I remember seeing 5:30-ish when I peeked a couple of times, but I intentionally wanted to do that because there was a hill during mile two that I knew would slow me down a bit. Other than that, I don’t remember looking at my watch too much. The more I race, the better I become at knowing how hard to push myself during different portions of the race so that I still have some kick at the end but feel like I gave it my all when I cross the finish line.

It was a perfect day for racing, and I love seeing so many people out there being active. That’s one of the best way to prevent heart disease! I am so proud of Craig for running the race as well. He didn’t feel the best, but he didn’t stop to walk! It was also fun having Cullen there, despite that he had no idea what was going on.

First race of the season complete, many more to come!

Hi, I'm Michelle

I love running around the lakes of Minnesota, running after my two boys, and racing anything from the 5K to the marathon. I have been blogging here since 2010 when I ran my first marathon. I finally secured my sub-3 hour marathon after trying for 8 years.

Wow, big congrats. And only half a year after having Cullen–that is super impressive. All of your hard work is paying off. P.S. The only time I see 5:30 on my Garmin is when it’s 5:30 p.m., lol.
