A Day in the Life – 4 Months Old

I am hoping to recap a typical day each month of Cullen’s life to show how our schedule changes each month. Cullen just turned 4 months old yesterday, so here’s a look at our day starting with last night (Tuesday) and through the end of today (Wednesday).

6:45 p.m. (Tuesday)

Cullen goes down for the night. He usually goes to bed 12 hours after he wakes up which is usually between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. He didn’t nap as much today, so I’m not surprised he went to bed a little earlier than normal.

7:45 p.m.

Cullen wakes up crying hysterically. He does this from time-to-time. I’m not sure why; I’m not sure if is gas or he is teething, or something else is wrong. Luckily nursing often calms him down, although sometimes it does not. It occasionally happens at night, but almost always happens in the afternoon around 3:00/4:00.

9:30 p.m.

Lights out for me.

2:00 a.m. (Wednesday)

Cullen is up. These days he usually sleeps 7 – 8 hours to start off the night, which is awesome! I definitely appreciate the extra sleep and feel so much more refreshed these days. (And I am totally jinxing myself by writing about this, huh?) He never fusses anymore when he wakes up. Instead he lies in his crib playing and cooing. I feed him and he goes back to sleep.

2:15 a.m.

Back to sleep for me.

5:15 a.m.

Cullen wakes up again. I feed him but he doesn’t fall asleep. This has been happening every night. Even though he doesn’t appear to be tired, I know he’ll fall back asleep, so I bring him into bed with me and lay down next to him. Within 10 minutes he’s sleeping again–it works every time.

6:00 a.m.

Now that Cullen’s back down, I get ready to go running. I had plans to get up to run this morning anyhow, so I get ready for my run.

7:15 a.m.

I return home from my 5 mile run. I foam roll and stretch while checking my e-mail and Facebook.

7:45 a.m.

Breakfast time. Craig and I grab breakfast before he goes off to work. I had a bowl of cereal and an English muffin–one half with avocado, the other half with peanut butter.

8:00 a.m.

I clean up the kitchen, put clean dishes away, fix our bed, and pick up around our bedroom.

8:30 a.m.

Cullen wakes up, and this is how I found the goofy guy in the morning. I change him and spend the next hour playing with him. We read books, practice “so big,” play peek-a-boo, I feed Cullen, and we hang out.

9:30 a.m.

I hop in the shower while Cullen plays on his play mat. He works on tummy time while I get ready. I take frequent breaks to play with him in between getting ready.

10:00 a.m.

Cullen is getting fussy, so I feed him and expect him to go down for his nap. I pull out all the tricks in my bag, but no suck luck. I give up after 45 minutes and have a snack: homemade soy banana bread and some almonds.

11:00 a.m.

Cullen is getting fussy again, so I feed him again and he falls asleep.

11:30 a.m.

Cullen is still sleeping, but we have plans to meet Craig for lunch. I try to transfer him to his carseat without waking him but he wakes up. We leave to pick up Craig for lunch. We have lunch at Qdoba and play with Cullen.

1:00 p.m.

When we get back, I put Cullen in his crib as he fell asleep on the car ride home. Surprisingly he only stays asleep for 15 minutes and then is up again. I try to feed him, but he is up for the time being.

1:30 p.m.

Cullen hangs out in his bouncy chair while I get a snack and do some computer work.

2:00 p.m.

We FaceTime with Grandma.

2:15 p.m.

Cullen is getting fussy again so we try eating to fall asleep, but no such luck. He is really fighting the naps today.

2:30 p.m.

Cullen hangs out in the sling

2:45 p.m.

He gets fussy again, so once again we try all sorts of tactics to get him to fall asleep. Finally he falls asleep at 3:00 p.m.

3:30 p.m.

He wakes up crying hysterically–just like I predicted above. Luckily nursing calms him down, and he falls back asleep. I finally have some time to work on my athlete plans. I snack on my favorite type of pear.

4:15 p.m.

Cullen wakes up, and we walk around and look in mirrors, see the dead bird outside that flew into our window, and wait until Craig gets home from work.

4:45 p.m.

Craig comes home. I tell him he has to take Sadie to the dog park as she destroyed Cullen’s vitamins because she is jealous of all the attention he is getting.

5:00 p.m.

Cullen plays in his exer-saucer. He isn’t quite strong enough to sit up on his own, so I have to stuff a blanket around him to help support his body.

5:30 p.m.

I get ready to go to the Dome. I usually do a track workout at the Dome, but since it is a cut-back week in terms of mileage and intensity, I walk and chat with Craig.

7:20 p.m.

We return home from the Dome. Craig and I grab a quick bite to eat. I have Vegan Chili.

8:00 p.m.

I feed Cullen and then work on this blog post.

8:47 p.m.

Cullen rolls over (from his back to his tummy) for the first time! You would have thought I witnessed a small miracle by the way I cheered and clapped.

9:00 p.m.

I feed Cullen again in hopes he will fall asleep, but no. I continue to work on this blog post.

10:00 p.m.

Finally Cullen falls asleep. He had fallen asleep in the Ergo while we walked at the Dome, which was why he went down later than normal.

10:30 p.m.

Lights out for me.

Hi, I'm Michelle

I love running around the lakes of Minnesota, running after my two boys, and racing anything from the 5K to the marathon. I have been blogging here since 2010 when I ran my first marathon. I finally secured my sub-3 hour marathon after trying for 8 years.

I know this post is four years old but I was reading it because my baby just turned four months, and I was curious to compare her days to other babies at a similar age. I just had to comment and say my dog did exactly that with my baby’s vitamin D! 🤣

I had to reread the post because I completely forgot that our dog chewed on the vitamin D bottle. I also relived all those days of how horrible of a sleeper and napper he was. (Mostly because I didn’t know what I was doing!)
