My Dog is Not a Runner

I seem to be recovering quite well from the marathon. I’ve got out every morning this week for a 3-5 mile run. My right hamstring was feeling especially sore at the beginning of the week, but it seems to have healed now.

This morning I ran one mile with Sadie and then finished two more on my own. She does good for 0.75 miles, but then I pretty much have to drag her home. There is a lot of coaxing involved. She is a black lab and shar pei mix, so maybe it is the shar pei in her that doesn’t care to run. Yet, she gets so excited to go every morning.

DSC_0003I’m still holding out and wearing my shorts, but it was a little too chilly for shorts this morning. My legs were bright red when I got back.

I tried a different flavor of the ALT Larabar and liked this one much better than the pumpkin pie one I had the other day.

Last night for dinner I made gnocchi with tofu and vegetables. It is super easy and a recipe that I created on a whim one weekend.

Looks super boring, but I promise tastes great!

I first started by frying the gnocchi in a little bit of oil in a pan. After they had sauteed for 8-10 minutes and were golden brown on the outside, I added a little bit of water to the pan so the gnocchi could finish cooking through to the middle.

I then emptied the pan, set the gnocchi aside, and sauteed the tofu in the pan until brown. Prior to frying the tofu, I did press it for 30 minutes by wrapping it in a paper towel and laying heavy items on top. I drizzled olive oil, maple syrup (the key!), salt, and pepper on top of the tofu and sauteed for 10 minutes until golden brown on both sides.

Lastly, I cut up one zucchini, a yellow squash, and several mushrooms. I fried them in the same pan with a little bit of olive oil until they were lightly brown and cooked through.

So so so good! Even Craig was a fan.

I purchased the gnocchi from Target. I’ve been buying the tri-colored gnocchi because it is significantly cheaper than the all-white variety. I don’t know why, but I’ll take it.

Please read this article called Surviving Whole Foods. If you shop at Whole Foods, you will definitely be able to relate. My coworker shared it with me, and I was busting a gut! Hilarious!

The first thing I see is the great wall of kombucha — 42 different kinds of rotten tea. Fun fact: the word kombucha is Japanese for ‘I gizzed in your tea.’ Anyone who’s ever swallowed the glob of mucus at the end of the bottle knows exactly what I’m talking about. I believe this thing is called “The Mother,” which makes it that much creepier.

Questions

What’s temperature is your breaking point between shorts and capris/pants?

It used to be 40*F, but I’ve been holding out and sporting shorts when the temps have been in the 30s these past few weeks.

What is your opinion of Whole Foods?

I love Whole Foods, but I do have to agree Whole Foods = whole paycheck.

Hi, I'm Michelle

I love running around the lakes of Minnesota, running after my two boys, and racing anything from the 5K to the marathon. I have been blogging here since 2010 when I ran my first marathon. I finally secured my sub-3 hour marathon after trying for 8 years.

I’ve never heard of gnocchi! We don’t have a Whole Foods close enough for me to frequent it. I did still laugh at the article though! I haven’t decided my breaking point yet. I’m really hoping to stick with outside running this winter.

Gnocchi is so easy to make yourself, you should try it! It is basically flour and water. I read the article about Whole Foods a few weeks ago, so funny. I wish our winter running got to the 30s more, I love the crisp feeling in the air!

I tried a while back to make my own gnocchi, but it didn’t turn out that well. My gnocchi ended up looking like moose turds more than anything else. Ha! If I remember correctly, I think the white potatoes worked better but the sweet potatoes were difficult to work with.

I love Whole Foods. I feel like you get what you pay for, and it’s not always worth it. Still, being able to return any product if you don’t like it/it doesn’t work (super important for some of the hippy health food products), knowing the produce is really high quality and organic and being able to find all of the hippy health food products is super important to me. It’s definitely worth waiting for their sales, though. They had 20% off all bulk goods this week, which made organic rolled oats $1.20/lb. That’s cheaper than buying quaker conventional oats! And they’ve got really inexpensive coffee—cheaper than Trader Joe’s even.
