Taper Time

It is taper time. This is always a bitter-sweet time for me. I love running high mileage, but it is nice to take a break too. However, with our picture-perfect fall weather this weekend, I’m not ready to wrap up my running season.

This last week started a three week taper for the Kenai River Marathon. It started out a little rough with my hamstring being very upset with the 100 mile week last week. I ended up taking Tuesday off to rest and ice a whole bunch. Luckily it worked and the rest of the week went as planned.

Mileage for the week of September 9 – 15, 2013

Monday

10 miles/1:22

My hamstring was bothering me during the whole run. Not good!

Tuesday

Rest

Wednesday

AM – 9 miles/1:13

PM – 4 miles/32:40

No pain in my hamstring! Yeah! Both runs went well.

Thursday

AM – 10 miles/1:25

Track workout: 4 x 400 meters, 2 x 1600 meters, 4 x 400 meters

PM – 2 miles/20:00

Run with Craig.

Friday

8 miles/1:06

The darkness really slows me down in the morning.

Saturday

16 miles/2:04

It is crazy how “easy” 16 miles seems!

Sunday

AM – 7 miles/56:00

PM – 4 miles/31:30

Both were good runs in beautiful fall weather!

Total: 70 miles

I was very excited when I found 50 cents on my Sunday morning run! I practically made more running than I do working!

It is time to retire my Mizuno Wave Rider 16s. I know they have way more than 500 miles on them. I loved these shoes.

I broke in my new Mizuno Wave Rider 16s on Saturday and Sunday. This is my second pair of the 16s, and I’m in love. I am very picky about my running shoes, but these fit really well—and they are light and flexible. (Hence the reason I bought a second pair.)

I’m going to do a more in-depth review on them later this week.

We are tapering even more this week and shooting for about 45 miles.

How do you feel about tapering? Do you love it or hate it?

What shoes are you running in now?

Hi, I'm Michelle

I love running around the lakes of Minnesota, running after my two boys, and racing anything from the 5K to the marathon. I have been blogging here since 2010 when I ran my first marathon. I finally secured my sub-3 hour marathon after trying for 8 years.

I laughed reading your “it’s crazy how easy 16 miles seems”…only because I doubt that line would ever come out of my mouth! But you worked hard for it. Me and my Mizunos will keep on…. 🙂

I love your new shoes! I am currently running in Brooks Adrenaline and have really considered trying a pair of Mizunos. I over pronate so have to keep that in mind. Enjoy your taper and best of luck in the Marathon!!

I am in taper made as well for my very first full marathon. I am beyond tired and so am hoping tapering restores my energy. Best of luck and by the way, I just ordered a pair of Brooks Ravenna 4’s to try. Both the Mizzunos and Ascics that I love have been discontinued. Boo!
