Food Trends II

I spoke too soon . . . .

Sadly, I managed to reinjure my glute at the gym yesterday morning and now have some pain in my hamstring when running. Bummer.

I knew I was walking a fine line increasing my mileage maybe a little too quickly. I tried to be cautious but also get back to my regular mileage as quickly as possible, but I guess my 10 miler last Saturday was a little too much. 6.5 miles into the run on Saturday, I started feeling some pain in my hamstring—on the same side I’ve had my glute pain. And of course I was too stubborn to stop, so I kept going. Plus, I’ve had out-of-the-ordinary pains show up for one run in the past and turn out to be nothing, so I was hoping it was one of these types of pains.

(Happy to run even if I did have some pain.)

But no such luck. After the 10-miler on Saturday, I took Sunday off and then ran on Monday and Tuesday, but the pain was still there. The physical therapist said I had to lay low the rest of the week and only run 3 miles each day. Wednesday afternoon I ran 1.5 miles before I started having the hamstring pain again, so I called it quits after 2 miles.

To add to that, when I was doing some weight lifting at the gym on Thursday morning, I somehow reinjured my gluete! I was using the abductor machine at the gym, and even though I have done this exercise in the past, I guess it was just too much for my weak glute because I couldn’t even put weight on that leg for a few hours. It got better as the day went on, so I decided to try running on it that night. Surprisingly I did not have any hamstring pain and only tiny bit of glue pain!

So. . . . .I am bummed. I have pushed aside any possibility of PRing at Boston. Now I just want to get in enough shape that I won’t be struggling throughout the entire marathon. I hope this heals quickly, so I can get back to training soon!

As for the rest of the week, this is what I’ve been up to. . . .and to mix things up, we are going to go backwards this time.

Friday

This morning Craig and I had our weekly coffee date before work. Coffee dates are the best. You should definitely try them with your significant other or a good friend!

I’m looking a little tired after getting up at 4:30 a.m. two mornings in a row.

Breakfast was a decaf Americano with a little cream and sugar, very soupy overnight oats, and an English muffin that is not pictured.

My suave date this morning.

Craig’s breakfast and his crazy concoctions: toast with Laughing Cow cheese and sunflower seed butter.

Thursday

I discovered my new favorite crackers! They are so good!! You must try these Back to Nature Stoneground Wheat crackers.

Wednesday

I have been noticing the slightly longer days. It is even still a little light out at 5 p.m. when I leave work.

This is a sunrise shot at about 8 a.m.

Tuesday

If anyone needs any cheap St. Patrick’s Day attire, go to Target. I scored both of these items for $1 a piece. I plan to wear them at our Shamrock Shuffle 5K in March.

I also picked up some early Valentine’s Day gifts for Craig. He loves Hot Tamales. I’m interested to find out what the New Orleans Chili dark chocolate bar tastes like.

Monday

I was off work, so I did very exciting things like get my teeth cleaned and checked at the dentist.

And take a couple of items to the dry cleaners.

Craig and I did hang out at Starbucks for a while. I sat right next to the fire and got toasty warm. I so need an electric fireplace in my house so that I can have an instant fire whenever I’m cold.

Sunday

Craig and I had a date night. Since we both didn’t have to work on Monday, why not go out on a Sunday night. We decided to go to Table 6. We went there for our anniversary this past summer and enjoyed our experience, so we decided to go back again.

DSC_0007

I don’t look very enthused to be there, but trust me, I did have a very nice time.

DSC_0005

I ordered the fresh fish of the day. So good with a light fruit sauce and vegetables on the side.

DSC_0001

Craig had a shrimp and rice dish that was also very good.

That wraps up the recap for the week.

I have been meaning to post about food trends that seem to be coming, while others seem so last year.

I find it interesting to watch the food trends come about, take over the foodie blog world, and fizzle out when a new one comes about.

I remember the days when everyone was all over:

– chia seeds

– Green Monsters

– overnight oats

– kale chips

– cake pops

– donuts

– sandwich thins

And this isn’t to say that a lot of people aren’t still eating these thing. (Me! See above for overnight oats.)

I have been trying to think about the new up and coming food items that are taking their place, but for some reason, I’m having a hard time coming up with much of anything.

To be honest, I have not been reading nearly as many blogs as I used to. When I was teaching, I was able to catch up on my favorite blogs in between classes, but now I would easily be caught reading blogs in my cubicle that is open to the rest of the office.

So this leads me to my question. . . .

Question

What are the up and coming food trends?

Hi, I'm Michelle

I love running around the lakes of Minnesota, running after my two boys, and racing anything from the 5K to the marathon. I have been blogging here since 2010 when I ran my first marathon. I finally secured my sub-3 hour marathon after trying for 8 years.

Let’s not forget the fancy, gourmet brownies a while back, anything with green tea, flavored (Oprah-loving) popcorn. Right now I think bundt cakes are getting hot, replacing cupcakes and cakepops (still never had one).

Those are good! I attempted to make cakepops, but they didn’t turn out so pretty.

Hmmm, I eat like a caveman so I don’t really pay attention to these things, but I have noticed a ton of “Fitmixer smoothies” on blogs the last few weeks. I don’t know what a Fitmixer is but it sounds lame. There must be some media campaign to get the word out about whatever it is.

It made me laugh how burnt Craig’s toast is (unless the picture just makes it look that way?).

    Sorry your glute’s still hurting!

Actually eating like a caveman is trendy right now because of the paleo diet! Haha!! Yes, that comment about Fitmixer made me laugh out loud because it is true!

Craig’s toast was definitely slightly charred.

I’m glad you’re doing better! I feel like I am SO out of shape right now! I go to run 6 miles and it feels like a marathon. Yikes!

I live in Europe (The Hague, Netherlands) and here, it seems, all trends come with a time lag: two new stores for cupcakes have just opened in my neighbourhood, and workshops for decorating cakes, cupcakes and cakepops are very, very in fashion!
The supermarket chain Ekoplaza which sells organic produce has been promoting lately carob products, such as carob powder and energy bars containing carob (instead of chocolate). Carob is very healthy and equally tasty but unfortunately very calorific, too.

That’s so interesting!! I just figured all of Europe was way ahead of the United States!
