Clean Air Challenge Bike Ride

Over the weekend, Craig participated in the Clean Air Challenge—a 60-mile (or 120-mile) charity bike ride for the American Lung Association.

This was the first time Craig has participated, but he looked like a pro out there.

The night before, my sister, mother-in-law, and I were busy making posters to cheer Craig on.

My sister, Kristy.

Yes, Kristy and I were honestly that cold. . . .while my mother-in-law was in a t-shirt.

My mother-in-law was born and raised in Alaska. And while everyone thinks I should be adapted to the colder weather, coming from Minnesota, I was always cold in MN too.

The next morning, we drove to the start where Craig got ready to go.

Safety first. . . . all riders were required to wear an orange vest.

Craig with his parents.

All ready to go. . .

The two signs we made:

“We Love Fixies” – Craig rides a fixed gear bike that he built. He loves that thing.

“Keep Puggin’ Away” – Craig’s parents have two pug dogs, which Craig also loves and wants one of his own.

Then it was time for him to start his 60-mile trek from Houston, AK to Talkeetna, AK.

Kristy and I stopped at various locations to cheer him on.

I think he enjoyed it.

One time we blasted the song “Black and Yellow” as we drove past.

Then we came upon these guys cheering the bikers on. Craig’s parents (and their two younger sons—the pug dogs) were sitting in the bed of their truck, hanging out, and cheering for the race participants. If this doesn’t scream “Alaska,” I don’t know what does!

During the second half of the race, I had to squeeze in a 16-mile long run. I thought I had all the logistics figured out, but Craig ended up being a speed demon the second half and beat me to the finish, so I didn’t get to see him finish. I felt bad.

He did great, and I’m proud of him for doing this event. My champion. 🙂

Hi, I'm Michelle

I love running around the lakes of Minnesota, running after my two boys, and racing anything from the 5K to the marathon. I have been blogging here since 2010 when I ran my first marathon. I finally secured my sub-3 hour marathon after trying for 8 years.
