Hot Yoga

This morning I did an “easy” 7 mile run in 60 minutes. I was a little worried I would be feeling sluggish from lifting weights the other day and running twice (10 miles) yesterday, but I actually felt quite good. I didn’t push myself by any means and just enjoyed the easy pace. 🙂

I have had a major itch to get my yoga on since the last time I went which was exactly a month ago–much too long! So tonight I made it a point to get my butt over to Anchorage Yoga for some Hot Flow Fusion!

I sure love sweating it out during yoga, but I’m not quite sure I got into this type of class. It was a combination of several different types of yoga: Bikram, Anusara, Kundalini and Ashtanga, but I don’t know enough about the different types to distinguish one from another.

I’m also not sure I was super fond of the instructor, the lack of music, and bright lights (instead of the dimly lit room the other two times I’ve gone), but then again this is only my 4th class. . . I’m still learning.

Hot yoga has been my favorite thus far, so I think I’ll stick with that for now.

Tonight’s dinner featured bacon from my parent’s farm we made sure to stock up on and bring back with us.

Craig made me a delicious BLT sandwich with home-grown bacon for me!!

I also enjoyed a delicious salad topped with tomatoes + zucchini + avocado! Love my veggies!! 🙂

Ever heard of “heart-attack snow?”

I hadn’t until I read Tina’s blog post about it. I know shoveling large amounts of wet, heavy snow is difficult, but I never thought it could actually cause someone to have a heart attack. . . . that is until my grandmother passed away last week from doing this very thing!!

I never did write on how my grandmother passed away, but that’s exactly what happened. She was trying to shovel her car out of the snow and had a heart attack right then and there. She was a very active lady–mobile, independent, and never needed assistance–but the colder temperatures + exerting herself too much lead to having a heart attack. Crazy, but so real!!

I’m so glad tomorrow is Friday!! It has been a long week!!

Question

What is your favorite kind of yoga?

Hi, I'm Michelle

I love running around the lakes of Minnesota, running after my two boys, and racing anything from the 5K to the marathon. I have been blogging here since 2010 when I ran my first marathon. I finally secured my sub-3 hour marathon after trying for 8 years.

I have yet to try yoga. I’m a fitness instructor at a YMCA over the summer and I’ve always avoided that class for some reason. I shouldn’t because everyone always posts about how fun it is!

i have heard about that kind of snow… my mom is a nursing prof and her specialty is cardiac care so she’s always talking about heart attacks, heart disease, etc. it’s so sad 🙁

I’m so sorry about your grandmother 🙁 That is just awful.

My favorite kind of yoga is bikram…but I do love vinyasa as well, as long as the atmosphere is right. It’s why I can’t take yoga at a gym, I love the dim lighting, soft music, and insense at a real studio, it’s so much more relaxing and soothing.

I am not sure who was teaching the fusion class. It is typically me and I would never teach a class with the lights on an no music. Just curious because it should always be taught with dim lights and music. Thanks for taking classes with us, I am glad that you enjoy them.

I see I looked at my schedule wrong, which would explain the confusion. . . my bad!

i’ve never been to a yoga studio, so i feel like i’ve only had the watered-down versions. but i really like the balance postures (i think that’s what its call, hard to know for sure…)

I think you must have been doing Bikram yoga, because the Hot Flow Fusion class is taught by Katey, where the lights aren’t turned up and she always has a playlist. Right now their Bikram insructor, Rick, is on vacation, so Nafisa, visiting from LA, is covering his classes. She’s pretty close to the standard Bikram dialogue and style of class, where the lights are on and there’s no music. The schedule swaps day by day, so 4:30 M/W/F is Hot Flow Fusion. T/TH is Bikram at that time…

It’s not unusual to dislike Bikram at first. It’s a whole series of it’s own, with a different motive. It is yoga, but it’s intention is to detoxify and work into the deep tissues of the body, which is why it’s at 105 degrees! It is also a class that is the same everytime you attend. It is designed to scientifically warm and stretch the muscles, ligaments, and tendons in the order in which they should be stretched. It is also said that Bikram “…tightens the screws of the mind.”

      Thank you for this response!

I wanted to go to Hot Flow Fusion, but I see I looked at my schedule wrong!! This makes complete sense because I did attend a Bikram class before and thought this class was very similar. I feel better knowing it is not uncommon to dislike Bikram at first!
