Sunrise, Sunset

One thing that makes Alaska unique is the amount of daylight we have.

We literally go from 19 hours of daylight in the summer to 5 hours in the winter! Crazy, right? This means we are gaining/losing daylight up to 5 minutes per day. This might not seem like a lot, but over the course of a week, that ends up being 30+ minutes. You can literally be driving to work during the sunrise one Monday morning and the next week it is nearly dark out.

I took this picture at 8:00 a.m. this morning. Pretty soon it will still be pitch-dark out at 8:00 a.m.

Today’s sunrise: 8:19 a.m.

Today’s sunset: 7:17 p.m.

Right now we are still at a reasonable amount of daylight, but as we get closer to winter solstice, I’ll be updating you on how quickly that changes!

Workout

This morning I ran to a track to do workout. I usually try to go once a week to the track. I enjoy track workouts (although they will always make me nervous!) because it mixes up my routine of running on the roads and gives me a good, hard workout!

My workout this morning:

2 miles warm-up to the track ~ time: 16:30

2 x 1600 meters (1600 meters = 4 laps) ~ 7:17, 7:06

2 miles back home ~ 16:00

It was a good workout. I felt good, and I tried to really push myself on the last one, which is evident by the time. There were barriers (cones, plastic fence material) on the track, so I had to hop over things and go around other items which got kind of annoying, but I tried not to focus on that.

Breakfast

I knew what I wanted for breakfast even before got back home after my workout. I tend to think about breakfast (and food in general) way too much on my runs. That’s why “I run so I can eat!”

A very creamy, cool yogurt bowl with the typical items, but this time I added cottage cheese. It was a good addition!

I also had a nutritious muffin. I love how easy to grab muffins are.

I was SO tired on my drive to work. The heater was on high, which made me nice and cozy, but my eyelids very heavy! My drive to work is 30 minutes, so the extra time only makes it worse.

My sister told me that if you’re falling asleep while driving, keep your mouth moving. You bet your bottom dollar I was singing, talking to myself, and yesterday even eating carrot sticks from my lunch. I think I need some extra sleep, huh? Hopefully tonight!

Lunch

A nice big dish of mixed salad greens. I was too lazy to add any toppings, so I just kept it simple with some dressing. Kind of boring, but it worked.

I also had a nice big sandwich that was starting to fall apart. As much as I love my Quick Honey-oat Bread, I don’t think it makes for the best sandwich bread. I think it was too sweet. Plus I made the sandwich last night, so the bread was kind of soggy. When I’m hungry though, those things don’t really matter. I gobbled it right up. 🙂Question

What tricks do you use to keep yourself from falling asleep while driving?

Hi, I'm Michelle

I love running around the lakes of Minnesota, running after my two boys, and racing anything from the 5K to the marathon. I have been blogging here since 2010 when I ran my first marathon. I finally secured my sub-3 hour marathon after trying for 8 years.
